For example, I use Rahr 2 row as my base barley malt 60 of the time and Crisp MO 40 of the ...

Aug 10, 2011 Barley Crusher Features. After looking at a handful of models, I decided on the barley crusher because of its good reviews in the homebrew forums. At 115 its not a small investment, but grain mills can easily get above 200 so its not on the higher end of the price range. Best Seller.
Setting the crush too fine often leads to stuck sparges. This type of grain mill can produce a good crush without too much husk damage if the spacing is set properly .035-.042 inch. It is the least expensive kind of grain mill, usually selling at about 50.00. The other type of grain mill crushes the malt between two rollers like a clothes ...
Aug 26, 2020 Im pretty frugal so I like the Barley Crusher MaltMill and I use a 38 drill I bought at Harbor Freight to power the mill. I generally keep my gap at 0.032-0.036 or 0.8636mm-0.9144mm but depending on the type of grain Im using, I may have to make slight adjustments real-time.

Aug 04, 2013 Anyone have experience milling different types of grain using different gap settings on their Barley Crusher Mine is set at the factory default 0.039 , I believe, and Ive never messed with it. I selected four different base malts Viking Xtra Pale, Rahr 2-Row, Briess 2-Row, and Admiral Gallaghers Best. I then used a 2-roller homebrew mill and crushed the malts using four different gap settings. The gap settings were 1.25 mm, 1.0 mm, 0.75 mm and 0.50 mm. I used a feeler gauge to verify these settings in between each milling.

Mar 28, 2009 Best Grind Setting for Grains Saturday, March 28th, 2009. It pays to listen to your grist, it can tell you a lot about your brew day before you ever mash in, if you look and listen to what it is telling you. Do not underestimate the importance of a good crush and the pitfalls of a bad crush on brew day.
Jun 30, 2019 I have a Barley Crusher mill and I like it just fine. I bought it because I was getting an inconsistent coarse crush from my LHBS. I brew BIAB so a finer crush was important to me and consistency was even more important to reliably reproduce the same beer. My gap is at .024 but once again I BIAB so the concept of a stuck sparge is foreign to me.
Dont use a coffee grinder to crush your grains. Even on the coarsest setting youll still over-pulverize your grains and end up with tannin problems. I have put malt in a 1 gallon ziplock bag and crushed it with a rolling pin. I have done up to 5 pounds that way in the past. It was tough but it worked.

Apr 05, 2008 The Barley Crusher is a dual roller malt mill, and the gap can be adjusted by turning a knob on the unit. It comes in two hopper sizes 7 lb and 15 lb, and I ended up purchasing the 7 lb model. The mill itself is built like a tank with cold-rolled steel rollers and machined-aluminum housing.
Nov 09, 2004 I also have a Barley Crusher and have experimented with the gap settings over the past 12 months. The standard setting is excellent. Jan 02, 2010 So i just sold a couple things last weekend on Craigslist, and i finally bought a barley crusher, which ive wanted for way too long. and when i got paid yesterday, my wife let me buy my first 50 sack of pale malt as well. The barley crusher instructions say that the gap is set at .039 thousands of an inch. my question is this.
Sep 06, 2013 Try tightening your gap, dont worry about how your crush looks relative to your old corona mill. I have used a barley crusher for about 4 years. I tightened mine up from the factory setting to about .032 . It worked great and gave me great efficiency 80-85 for about three years and has been slowly wearing out over the last year or so.
Feb 25, 2016 BIABers should be able to mill fairly finely tightening the gap till somewhere in the 80 mash efficiency range or higher. Most cooler mash and batch sparge folk may need a middle ground, not all flour, but a good fine crush. Malt conditioning may really help here tightening up the gap while leaving more intact husks.
I set my gap at 1.7mm and get efficiency in the range of 90-92. Im also doing step mashes and single decoctions with German malt Weyermann which is pretty plump. If you are using domestic grain especially 6-row then you will need a tighter gap. When I go to 1.5mm or 1.6mm my efficiency does not improve, but I do have runoff problems.
